Ayurveda
What is Ayurveda?
To start simply, Ayurveda is a system of holistic health which began some five thousand years ago on the Indian subcontinent. It is thought to be the oldest continually practiced system of healthcare in the world.
At its core, Ayurveda is about finding balance through connection—connection to the body, the mind, the spirit, and the world of which we are a part. Ayurveda focuses the rhythms of the natural world and uses diet and lifestyle practices to address imbalances in the body and mind. And, perhaps most importantly, it offers us a new way in which to relate to and come to know ourselves in a way which facilitates deep healing.
How does it work?
Ayurveda sees each person as a unique individual with a unique constitution and, therefore, there is no “one-size-fits-all” prescription. Instead, recommendations are tailored to each person and their imbalances or needs, with sensitivity to the changes in these conditions over time. Rather than a quick fix, Ayurveda offers the opportunity to journey into deeper understanding and to address the imbalances which underlie symptoms. In an age and society in which we are bombarded with so much at such high speed, having a system which cares for all of you, not just the physical, is essential to true health.
How do you practice Ayurveda?
My own experience with Ayurveda as a beautiful and deeply healing system combines with my background in theologies and justice studies, and the ground on which my work is based is cultivating connection and community. I believe that in order to be truly healthy beings, we must be part of healthy communities and a healthy world, and social justice is the greatest healer of all. Though my work extends from individual consultations to community retreats to eco-justice work, my focus is always on balance and connection.
Ayurveda involves a commitment to continual listening to and learning from yourself. I work to create the conditions of support and structure which can help your inherent wellness to emerge. To that end, I offer a gentle and nourishing approach. The results will not be instantaneous, but they will be lasting.
